Prof. Dr. med. Karl R. Aigner – Medical Director
Prof. Dr. med. Aigner is one of the world’s pioneers in the field of regional chemotherapy. He has been involved with regional chemotherapy for over 30 years and today he is considered as one of the world’s most experienced experts in this treatment method. Numerous lectures and guest operations in the USA, Japan, China, Israel, Egypt, Australia and a number of other countries, as well as over 200 professional publications, lectures and guest operations both in Germany and abroad attest to his medical commitment to RCT – regional chemotherapy.
Prof. Aigner completed his medical studies and his basic surgical training in cardiovascular surgery at the University of Erlangen. He obtained his habilitation doctorate in surgical oncology at the University of Giessen, with a research focus in techniques of regional chemotherapy. In 1981, Prof Aigner developed a technique for performing the first isolated liver perfusion in humans using a heart-lung machine, and over subsequent years a variety of additional surgical procedures and specialized catheters for isolated therapy of organs and parts of the body, including the treatment of pancreatic carcinoma.
From 1986 until 1991, Prof. Aigner was Chief Physician for Surgery at the Kreiskrankenhaus Trostberg am Chiemsee, and until 2001, he was the Chief Physician in the Department of Oncological Surgery at the Asklepios Paulinen Clinic in Wiesbaden. From 2002 until 2005 he led the Department of oncological surgery at the Medias Klinik GmbH in Ransbach-Baumbach. Since 2006 Prof. Aigner has been the Medical Director of the Medias Klinikum GmbH & Co KG, a private clinic for oncological surgery in Burghausen (Salzbach).

Emir Selak – Senior Physician
Emir Selak completed his medical studies in Banja Luka (Bosnia & Herzegovina), where he went on to work for five years in the Department of Neurosurgery of the regional university hospital.
The Bosnian-born doctor began working with Professor Aigner in 1993. First, he completed his specialty training with an assistantship in General Surgery, working on Prof. Aigner’s team, and subsequently, he specialized in the techniques of regional chemotherapy.
From 2002 until 2006 he worked with Prof. Aigner as a Senior Physician in the Department of Oncological Surgery at the Medias Klinik GmbH in Ransbach-Baumbach. Since 2006, Dr. Emir Selak has been Senior Physician in the Department of Oncological Surgery at the Medias Klinikum GmbH & Co. KG in Burghausen (Salzbach).
Dr. Selak is member of the Professional Association of German Surgeons (BDC)
Dr. med. Sabine Gailhofer – Senior Physician
Dr. Sabine Gailhofer studied in Munich and Los Angeles (USA) and obtained her doctoral degree in 1988 in the Dermatology Department at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich; her dissertation concerned the “Effects of argon lasers on the epidermis, corium and blood vessels.”
In 1991 she received an award for best poster for her presentation on “Regional Chemotherapy for Pancreatic Cancer” at the Vth International Conference on Advances in Regional Chemotherapy (ICRCT 91), and in 1994 she was awarded the prize for “best scientific presentation on ovarian cancer” at ECCO (European Congress on Clinical Oncology) in Paris.
She has been working together with Professor Aigner since 1989. Beginning as an Assistant Physician, she went on to complete her surgical specialty training and conducted research work about specific topics related to regional chemotherapy. From 2002 until 2006, Dr. Gailhofer was Senior Physician with Prof. Aigner in the Department of Oncological Surgery of the Medias Klinik GmbH in Ransbach-Baumbach. Since 2006, she has been Senior Physician at the Medias Klinikum GmbH & Co. KG in Burghausen (Salzach).
Dr. Gailhofer is member of the Professional Association of German Surgeons (BDC).
Kornelia Aigner - Certified Biologist
Kornelia Aigner studied biology in the German cities of Regensburg and Düsseldorf, specialising in the fields of immunology and bioinformatics. She worked on calculating the structures of non-coding RNA at the Institute of Physical Biology (Institut für Physikalische Biologie) at the Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf.
As a research assistant at the Medias Klinikum, she currently plans and supervises studies exploring regional chemotherapy. The main focus of her work is immune status and tumour microenvironments during therapy.
Aigner is also responsible for the area of "personalised medicine" and organises genetic analyses of solid tumours, which may lead to target-oriented therapy depending on the mutations found, for patients on request.
Dr. Karl E. Steinbach – Director of Anaesthesia and Pain Therapy
Dr. Karl Steinbach directs the Department of Anaesthesia and Pain Therapy. Born in Cologne, he completed his medical studies at the Ruhr University Bochum and the University of Hamburg.
In Hamburg, he received a “Diploma for Tropical Medicine and Parasitology” and at the Ruhr University, the specialty designation of “Anaesthesiologist” along with the designation of “Pain Therapy Specialist.” During a number of different externships abroad, including in Israel, India, Scotland, France and South America, he expanded his wide-ranging knowledge in his areas of specialization. He has published a number of articles on the subject of pain therapy.
Dr med. Hans-Ulrich Mayr – Internist
Dr Mayr is a consultant for internal medicine at the Medias Klinikum. He studied medicine at the Ludwig Maximilian University (LMU) in Munich and the "Université Pierre et Marie Curie" in Paris. While working on his thesis, Dr Mayr was a scholarship holder of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).
After working at a number of hospitals, including at the Klinikum rechts der Isar in Munich, the University Hospital Center of Montpellier in France (as the assistant of Prof. Charles Mion and Prof. Stanley Shaldon) and the Hannover Medical School, and authoring a multitude of scientific publications, he achieved recognition as a specialist in internal medicine specialising in nephrology. Dr Mayr is currently the Medical Director of the outpatient clinic MVZ Dr. Mayr und Kollegen in Altötting-Burghausen.
